Search Friendly URLS – AKA Pretty Permalinks

Setting up search engine friendly URLS (aka pretty permalinks) in WordPress is quite simple.

Here are the steps…

  1. Login into your WordPress dashboard. Go to Settings > Permalinks
  2. Toggle the last radio button next to “Custom Structure”
  3. Enter in the custom structure field: /%postname%/
  4. Click Save Changes.

Some possible additional steps:
Some web hosting servers will allow WordPress to automatically generate a .htaccess file in the site root and some won’t so you have to go look to be sure.

  1. Connect to the website using your favorite ftp program and look for a .htaccess file in the root or at the same level of your wp-config.php file.
  2. If the file is present, download it to your computer and open it in Dreamweaver or your favorite text editor.  Look to see if the code block from the end of this post is present in the .htacess file you downloaded.
  3. If the code does not exist then paste in the code that follows this list.
  4. Upload

If you don’t have an .htaccess file then you need to create one. You can do this using a simple text editor or Dreamweaver. Copy and paste the code below, save and upload and you should be good to go.

Paste the code below into your .htaccess file

RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
